Set Your Listbuilding Goals

In order to grow your list you need to set a listbuilding goal. It is not enough to say “I want to grow my list.” You have to know what it is that you wish to achieve. Do you simply want more subscribers? Build engagement? Get people to join your Facebook group? Most people have no clear direction. They don’t know what they’re working toward and they have no way to gauge their success or failure.

Think of it like being an airline pilot. You can go into the cockpit and sit down. You may know what all the controls do but you have no destination or flight plan. How do you know if you did your job? How do you know if you arrived where you intended to be?

The simple answer is you don’t. That’s what it’s like to coast through life without goals. Goals are your flight plan. They help you chart a path from where you are right now to where you want to be. Without a plan, you’re just flying around in circles and burning valuable fuel.

Follow Through

Setting a goal doesn’t matter if you aren’t willing to commit to seeing it through. It’s the equivalent of coming up with a flight plan but never setting foot in the cockpit. Following through on a goal is hard and it can be scary. In the case of building your list, if you want it to grow, only you can make that happen.

Mindset is Crucial to Reaching Goals

Most people fail at reaching their goals because they neglect to change their mindset. It’s easy to make excuses for why you aren’t achieving your goals. You may tell yourself that you don’t have the time or money to pursue your goals. You may tell yourself that you were dealt a bad hand in life and you can’t do anything to change it.

You have to be willing to set these excuses aside and take responsibility. When a pilot sits down in the cockpit, they take responsibility for the aircraft. They can’t make excuses because they have the lives of other people in their hands and so do you. You have your life in your hands. What you choose to do with it is your responsibility.

Set a Vision of Your Finish Line

To meet a goal, you have to be focused on the finish line. It’s easier to binge on Netflix than it is to work toward you goals. That’s why it’s important that you have a visual reminder of the finish line.

This finish line image can be a picture of the island where you’ll go on vacation after you’ve gotten out of debt or a collage of what your home office will look like when you finally earn enough to quit your job. Focusing on your finish line keeps you motivated and increases your chances of success.

Becoming goal focused is difficult and requires discipline. But if what you want is important to you, then you’ll find a way to reach your goals and live the life you want.

Building Authority Through Online Networking


How cool would it be if you could build authority in your niche overnight? Yeah, that would be great but like many things, it just doesn’t work that way. You have to build it piece by piece.

At the same time though, there are ways to speed up the process through networking properly with other thought leaders in your niche.

Thought Leaders

If you can network with other thought leaders in your niche and if you can align yourself with them/work with them, then you will be able to create more opportunities to associate yourself with them in the eyes of your fans.
What this then means is that right away, you will gain some of the trust and authority they have simply through your connection to them.

For instance, if you could get a top digital marketer to say that your e-book on making money was great, then you would not only get the exposure from them but also the seal of approval that would come with that.

The same goes for having a guest post published on a top blog – again you will benefit because people trust them and will thus be more likely to trust you by extension.

Working With Top Bloggers

So that’s great in theory but how do you actually get to the point where those big bloggers are going to be happy to promote you?

There are many popular methods for working with other bloggers in content marketing and these provide a ‘framework’ of sorts that you can use to structure your own interactions. The guest post is one example – it’s generally accepted that many blogs will accept contributors and provide them with a link back if the content is good.

Another option is to do an ‘ad swap’. Here you will promote another blogger to your mailing list in exchange for them doing the same for you. That way you both benefit by gaining exposure to the audience the other has built a relationship with.

LinkedIn and networking events provide good opportunities to meet these bloggers and to discuss working with them. One point to remember is to avoid the temptation to go straight for the biggest bloggers in your niche first. A smarter strategy is to approach a blogger with a smaller following and to work your way up as you gain exposure for your own brand.

Speaking Directly to Your Audience

Facebook Live is still kind of the new kid on the block. More and more people are using this function but at the same time it’s in its infancy stage when compared to Vimeo and Youtube.

Recently I began a Facebook Live Challenge (see my first episode) . Although I was nervous, it was so fun to do. More importantly though, it is one more tool that I’m using to build authority, speak to my audience and gain new fans. The best part? I can do it right from my kitchen.

A few pieces of advice that I highly recommend you follow:

  • Jot down a few notes on what you want to talk about
  • Avoid answering any comments until the end because you don’t want to get distracted and lose your train of thought.

The First Post is the Hardest


Have you ever heard the Rod Stewart song – The First Cut is the Deepest? That song was going through my mind when I came up with the title for this post.

The Creative Slide is a brand new website for my digital products and I’ve put a lot of time and effort to get it up and launched. The one thing I have been avoiding is writing posts so that people actually have something to read when they get here!

For me the first post or first page of anything is so challenging to write. Talk about writer’s block!

So let me tell you a bit about what plans I have for this site. As I said, it’s called The Creative Slide and it’s a place to showcase my digital products, provide training through posts and videos. I also have a bunch of other ideas and plans for the site which I will reveal as the months unfold.
